Stray dog jumps into hiker's truck to escape the rain – and never leaves
Sam was unpacking a fast-food meal in his truck when he spotted a tan dog wandering around the rain-soaked car park. He had stopped to eat and wait out the weather on his way home from a hike. Their encounter, reported by The Dodo, led him to take in the dog he would later name Gus.
The dog was going from car to car in search of food, but nobody opened a door. Upset to see him alone and hungry, Sam put some of his own meal into a container, opened his truck door and called him over.
Gus ran towards him, went straight past the food and jumped into the truck instead. Sam had intended to share his meal, not take on a passenger, but he was not going to send the dog back out into the rain. He explained: “I didn’t plan on him getting into my truck … [but] at that point, I was not going to kick him out in the rain.”
Still dripping, Gus sat briefly on the passenger seat before eagerly eating the food Sam offered. Sam knew nothing about his history or how long he had been living on his own. For now, his plan was simply to keep Gus with him until he could be sure the dog was safe.

Veterinary care and a place at home
Sam was concerned about the cost of caring for Gus, but remained committed to helping him. He took the dog to a vet for vaccinations and flea prevention, and the news was reassuring: tests for heartworm and parasites came back negative, and Gus was healthy. Beyond a few baths to get rid of the dirt and fleas, all he needed was basic veterinary care, medication, food and attention.
What was meant to be a temporary arrangement gradually turned into everyday life. Gus took over the sofa and filled Sam’s photo gallery as they settled in together. He was still getting used to living indoors, but he was safe.
From foster to forever home
Sam went on to officially adopt Gus. He said the dog’s affectionate nature, calm body language and appearance had helped him picture a lasting future together, rather than the stopgap he had first considered.
Since the adoption, their days have mixed cuddles at home with trips outdoors. Gus loves being outside and exploring, and their outings have taken them to the beach, along hiking routes, and to rivers and waterfalls.
For Sam, caring for Gus has brought a stronger determination to succeed and to give him a loving, stable home. He summed it up: “Gus gave me a stronger drive to succeed, not just for myself but for him, because he is now my baby and he deserves a loving and stable home.” The dog who once went from car to car in the rain now has a truck, a sofa and a hiking partner of his own.
