In Füllinsdorf, in the Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft, regular users of the Obere Hofackerstrasse bus stop know Cleo well. Every day, this 9-year-old cat waits for her favourite human to return. It is a well-established routine that has attracted some particularly kind attention...

As reported by 20 Minutes, the home of Kleopatra is 5 minutes away. But for the past 3 years, Cleo has had a habit that leaves her owner puzzled: she follows her to the stop, then settles down and waits for her return for hours on end, sometimes 8 or even more.

“Every time I leave for work, she follows me and waits at the bus stop, even though my house is only 5 minutes away,” says Kleopatra, who still cannot explain this behaviour.

“Sometimes we even went on outings”

The bond between the cat and her human goes back a long way. From a very young age, Cleo learnt to follow Kleopatra, and the 2 would go out together. “Sometimes we even went on outings,” she says. The cat is an Egyptian Mau, a breed which, according to her owner, is easier to train than other cats.

At the stop, the cat does not go unnoticed: children and passengers have taken her to their hearts. “Lots of people stroke her and are charmed by her,” explains Kleopatra.

A miniature bus shelter to keep her safe

Those long waits have not gone unnoticed. In mid-October, a small wooden hut lined with straw appeared near the Obere Hofackerstrasse stop, placed there by an anonymous cat lover. It allows the lovely Cleo to wait in comfort. Who wielded the saw and hammer? Nobody knows.

On Facebook, the post by Kleopatra about the new shelter quickly spread, attracting more than 2,000 likes. “I would like to thank the person who built this for Cleo,” she writes. The comments are overwhelmingly enthusiastic, with some simply hoping that vandals will not target the shelter.

The drivers at Autobus AG, the company serving the stop, also know this regular visitor. They welcome the initiative and fully approve of the little house built for Cleo. As for the cat herself, she seems to be making the most of her new home!

But will Cleo’s hut be allowed to stay?

One question remains: is the little structure allowed to stand beside the stop? Kleopatra does not yet know, but she already has a backup plan.

“In case it cannot stay there, I have asked a neighbour whose garden overlooks the bus stop whether we could put it in her garden,” she concludes.
