Officer uses his own water to rinse bleach from stolen dog found in car
On the back seat of a car being investigated as stolen, Officer Edwards found a small dog whose fur was covered in bleach. The police dog handler was assisting with the vehicle investigation in Florida when he discovered the animal, which had also been stolen. The rescue was reported by WTWCFOX.
The dog had been taken during an earlier burglary. Officers subsequently intercepted a car that had been reported stolen, bringing Edwards into contact with the animal. Although the dog was found inside that vehicle, the burglary and the vehicle theft were separate cases.
The bleach appeared to have been used in an attempt to destroy potential evidence on the dog. That remained a possible explanation for the substance on its fur, not an established motive. The account did not identify the person who had doused the animal.
His own water, then a blanket
Edwards acted promptly, using his own supply of water to rinse the bleach from the dog's fur. Once he had rinsed the animal, he wrapped it in a blanket. His care continued beyond those first steps: he kept watch over the dog while waiting for Animal Control officers to arrive.
WTWCFOX adds that Edwards stayed beside the dog to comfort it, and that the local animal control officers took over its care when they arrived. That handover was the last documented stage of the rescue. At the time of that account, there was no information about the dog's health. It was also unclear whether its owners had been located or whether the animal had been returned to them.
